Web Design Terms On Chalkboard

In order to sell a product, you have to be knowledgeable about it. We have a huge library of terms we use on a daily basis and many of them would be beneficial for anyone involved in the web design process to know. To get you started, here are just 8 of the most popular web design terms and their definitions.

HTML
stands for hypertext mark-up language. That simply means the language used to write web pages that allows content to be displayed on your site.

Social Media Marketing, or SMM, is a method for gaining website traffic using social media pages to attract the viewer’s attention. This is done through the strategic placement of ads on the newsfeeds of specific audiences, as well as suggested posts, based on the viewer’s interests and online activity.

Usability is a general term that includes how easy it is to use the navigation, content, images, and other interactive elements. Sites with optimal usability make it a breeze for visitors to find the information they need, contact the business, and more.

A 404 Page will appear when you come across a broken, outdated, or dead link. This is one of the most common error messages and occurs when the server you are trying to access could not find what you were requesting.

Responsive Web Design, or RWD, is a tactic in web design that optimizes a website to fit on any device that has internet accessibility. This means the webpages can be resized and scrolled through while maintaining an organized shape. A site with RWD can be properly viewed from a mobile phone, tablet, desktop computer, and anything in between.

WYSIWYG is a type of user friendly editor that stands for What You See Is What You Get. You can use it to make easy text changes, and if you feel comfortable, image changes as well, in your CMS or content management system.

CMS stands for content management system. This serves as a computer application which supports the creation and modification of digital content using a common user interface. Multiple users in a collaborative environment benefit from this type of system. WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems, and is used to create blogs and all types of websites that are easy for clients to make edits to themselves.

What is a Domain and/or URL? A domain or URL is the address your site is located on. It’s how the web identifies your site, for example, bestbuy.com. A domain or URL can be owned by an individual or business without a website uploaded onto the server. The website files and the domain are separate entities joined together by professional web designers and developers to create a functional website that will be found by search engines.

E-commerce
is short for electronic commerce, this involves the purchase and sale of products online. Amazon is one of the most well-known and popular e-commerce websites that people around the world use. PayPal is another online payment method available, which many retailers, including Walmart, Ulta Beauty, and Best Buy use. It supports instant transfer, eCheck, PayPal balance, and credit card purchases.
